The Flimp Festival
Often characterized as The Museums Gift to the Community,
the Flimp Festival is held each year on the first Saturday in May. The
celebration of art, creativity, imagination and humor takes place on the
Museums grounds within the Blount Cultural Park between 10:00 a.m.
and 4:00 p.m.
The festival takes its name from a bronze fountain in the Museums permanent
collection created in 1937 by Alabama sculptor, Geneva Mercer. Ms. Mercer
called the small, elf-like creatures she envisioned for her fountain Flimps
(a conflation of the words flower and imp.) The Flimps
are inhabitants of gardens and are responsible for all the wonderful
transformations that take place there in the spring.
Flimp
Festival activities include Artists Avenue, the Art Making
Tent, Art Cars, Kite Flying and the Museums puppet show for pre-schoolers,
Shape Up Little Schmoozie. Specialty foods and entertainment
are also offered throughout the day. Mark your calendar today to enjoy this
community celebration on the first Saturday in May.
Summer Art Sampler
The annual Summer Art Sampler is a warm-weather feast for the senses planned
around a current Museum temporary exhibition. It features fun and activities
for the entire family, as well as a thematic supper al fresco on the Museum
grounds.
Holiday Open House
The Museum annually hosts this reception honoring the Holiday Season complete
with childrens choirs, art making activities for children and a never
ending supply of punch and cookies. The Holiday Open House is a chance for
all the members of the family to enjoy the Museum exhibitions and activities
together, and to nourish that Holiday spirit.
Military Open House
Members of the armed forces stationed at Maxwell/Gunter Air Force Base are
invited to explore the Museum and its programs with their families. Every
year numerous military personnel contribute time as volunteers or monetary
support to the Museum through membership or program participation. The Military
Open House is our way of saying thank you to the armed services
personnel who spend a part of their duty in Montgomery with their community
museum. |
